Despite all the advances in veterinary medicine, parasites remain a major problem. Most of them can be controlled with proper medications and sanitation practices. Internal parasites such as hookworms, whipworms, roundworms, and heartworms can be diagnosed with simple lab tests. Most of these can be eliminated with proper drug therapy and many can be prevented from recurring with good sanitation practices and medication. Above all, safety of anti-parasitics is very important.

We recommend Heartgard Plus® or Triheart®  for the monthly prevention of heartworms and intestinal parasites. If monthly pills are hard to remember there is an injection, called ProHeart®,  which prevents heartworms for 6-12 months.

External parasites such as fleas, ticks, and mites are also very common. Treatment of many of these parasites may involve treating the animal and its environment with various compounds. Remember, many of these parasites can attack humans or transmit other diseases to humans (ie: Lyme disease, Ehrlichiosis, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever).

For dogs we recommend a chewable product for the prevention and treatment of fleas and ticks . Nexgard ®, Simparica® and Credelio® are once monthly chewable preventatives that work against the fleas and ticks in our area.  Bravecto®  is another great option as it works for 3 months in a row.

For cats, topical products are best.  We recommend Revolution® or Bravecto® to prevent fleas and ticks.
